       Prolifico director, capaz de rodar entre seis y siete filmes por ano, durante treinta, ajustandose siempre al presupuesto, cuya filmografia en el western se centra en la serie del cowboy cantante Roy Rogers, en algunas peliculas de la correspondiente serie del tambien cowboy cantante Gene Autry, y en la reunion, de dos en dos, de diversos capitulos del serial televisivo dedicado a Wild Hill Hickcok, con Guy Ma dison y Andy Devine como protagonistas. Estos ultimos, un total de 28 episodios distribuidos en catorce peliculas, no figuran aqui, dado su caracter de filmes realizados para TV que no han sufrido modificacion alguna antes de su pase en sa las de cine. Falle cido en 1980, puede resultar sorprendente que Mc - Donald firme una ultima pelicula como director en 1994. Se explica porque el largometraje en cuestion esta formado por escenas tomadas de otro serial televisivo, dedicado en esta ocasion al famosisimo Wyatt Earp, y escenas nuevas ro dadas para completar el metraje. Estas ultimas, evidentemente, no fueron rodadas por McDonald, sino por el que figura en los titulos de credito como co-director: Paul Landres.

       En sus inicios profesionales, a mediados de los anos 30, Witney hizo un poco de todo: fue montador, ayudante de direccion e, incluso, guionista, pero a partir de 1937 se dedico a la realizacion, convirtiendose en uno de los directores prolificos de Hollywood, en este caso para la productora Republic. En sus primeros anos como realizador, se especializo en seriales realizados en colaboracion, en particular con John English. La division del trabajo era sencilla: este rodaba las escenas de dialogo y los interiores, y Witney las escenas de accion. De este modo, fue adquiriendo justa fama como director de peliculas de accion, con grandes peleas y largas cabalgadas. Aunque la parte mas extensa de su filmografia la ocupan los westerns, es justo reconocer su labor en otros filmes de accion como Aventuras del capitan Maravillas (Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941), se rial realizado con el ya citado John English. Como al gunos otros de sus companeros, sirvio extensamente a estrellas del western, en este caso Roy Rogers y Rex Allen. En sus peliculas hay de todo, pero no seria malo revisarlas con alguna atencion porque encontraremos en ellas no pocos detalles interesantes de personal estilo cinematografico.

Выясняется, что обезьяны властвуют на этой планете и считают немногочисленные примитивные племена людей низшими существами, которых они вольны истреблять или захватывать в плен в любых количествах. Один из 3 космонавтов погибает; второму извлекают мозг. 3-й, попав в плен, привлекает внимание 2 ученых шимпанзе. Он помогает им доказать, что на этой планете некогда существовала цивилизация людей. Это открытие провозглашается ересью, и 2 ученых идут под суд. Космонавт сбегает от обезьян и узнает, что на самом деле находится на Земле, за 2000 лет до того разрушенной атомной войной.
       Картина Фрэнклина Шэффнера непроста для понимания. Многие его амбициозные проекты (Полководец, The War Lord, 1965: Пэттон, Patton, 1970) зачастую разочаровывают, как будто энергия, затраченная Шэффнером на их подготовку, полностью испаряется в 1-й съемочный день. Несколько иным выглядит случай с Планетой обезьян – проектом, изначально предназначенным не для него: Шэффнер подхватил его после того, как несколько режиссеров отказались от постановки. Этот фильм довольно нескладен, как и все творчество Шэффнера, однако в карьере режиссера он, несомненно, занимает самое важное место. В нем перемешиваются многие ипостаси: масштабное зрелище, тревожный и беспокойный научно-фантастический рассказ, пацифистский и антирелигиозный памфлет, сатира на человеческую гордыню, построенная на радикальной (и иногда комической) перемене ролей в иерархии людей и обезьян. Акцент на последнем аспекте – вероятно, в большей степени заслуга Рода Серлинга: во всяком случае, тут можно вспомнить несколько эпизодов телесериала Сумеречная зона, The Twilight Zone, сценаристом которого выступал Серлинг. Шэффнер предпочитает не делать ни один жанр доминирующим. Его осторожная, выжидательная политика не лишила фильм привлекательности и принесла ему огромный успех.

Ли-Томпсон, 1973, – не лишены интереса, однако более поверхностны и менее блистательны по форме, нежели фильм Шэффнера.
